Why the Ryder Cup is the most important tournament in professional golf?
If you are a weekly reader of our newsletter, I have written at length about the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup has been on my mind ever since the Masters back in April. When I was fortunate enough to volunteer for the entire week at the 2021 Ryder Cup, it helped spark my passion for professional golf and carve my voice in the space. It was truly an unbelievable week and once in a lifetime experience to be there for a historic Ryder Cup, with Team USA winning by the largest margin of victory in the modern Ryder Cup era.
I have done a lot of thinking on why I love the Ryder Cup so much. What comes to mind first, like many others, is the team aspect of the tournament, the strategy of pairings, debating captain’s picks, and the energy that is felt all week on the grounds that you can feel through your television screen. What makes this event amazing is the compelling storylines, rivalries between players, and intriguing headlines to give fans a reason to tune into golf, outside of the four majors.
Over the last couple Ryder Cup’s, the event has produced many storylines that has made this tournament even more special, defining players' legacies for years to come.
In 2016, we had the infamous Sunday singles duel between Patrick Reed and Rory McIlroy, where both players were letting all their emotions out on the course. During a two-hole stretch, Rory shushed the American crowd, followed by Patrick Reed on the next hole doing the Dikembe Mutumbo finger waggle at him.

In 2018, it was a complete massacre and the Europeans truly caused a riff between the USA squad with Patrick Reed calling out both Jim Furyk and Jordan Spieth to the the media. He was pissed that Spieth wanted to play with his best friend Justin Thomas. This was pretty ironic as the Spieth & JT tandem was the only bright spot for the USA team the entire week. Reed also complained he had to play with Tiger Woods, who was fresh off his Tour Championship victory.

In 2021, the best team Team USA was ever assembled on paper. There was still some of the Brooks-Bryson beef brewing that people were wondering how it would play out. but the USA totally dominated and it thus became a non-story. It ended with Rory crying on national television in his post match interview stating how he let the team down and it has been a tough week for him personally.
In 2023, during the Saturday afternoon matches, a rumor was spread that Patrick Cantlay was boycotting the PGA of America by not wearing a hat because he wasn’t getting paid. It started with fans waving their hats at Cantlay, but ended with him sinking a clutch putt on 18, prompting Cantlay to mock the fans back with a tip of the cap. This also led to Cantlay’s caddie, Joe LaCava, waving his hat in Rory’s face while trying to read his putt to potentially tie the match.

All these moments have been talked about for years and are pivotal moments in golf history. That is what makes this tournament so special and entertaining, on and off the golf course.
Professional golf right now has lacked captivating storylines and headlines to drive the non golf fans to turn on their TV and watch a tournament. This has been a problem that the PGA Tour specifically is still trying to solve.
You can argue the last time we truly felt rivalries was when LIV Golf first started. Before that, we had the famous Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka beef that escalated after Brooks Koepka rolled his eyes when Bryson walked by him while he was being interviewed at the 2021 PGA Championship.
Because of the storylines, key moments, and rivalries that have been generated through the Ryder Cup, it makes me truly believe that the Ryder Cup is the most important golf tournament we have in our beloved sport.
For this year, we had the debate of if Keegan will pick himself or not. Rory is already complaining about the fans and how he expects another incident to occur at this Ryder Cup. Rory and Bryson are continuing to chirp each other and fans are patiently waiting to see them get matched up on Sunday singles.
Buckle up because I believe this year will have the same energy as 2023, especially when you throw Long Islanders in the mix.
Three Ryder Cup Prop Bets
Tournament Foursome Winner: USA +115
On Monday, Justin Ray put a very interesting tweet about recent Ryder Cups:
Over the last 6 Ryder Cups, the home side has a +27 point differential in foursomes (37.5 to 10.5).

We haven’t had a team win a road Ryder Cup since the all-time collapse at Medinah, where the European came back from a 10-6 deficit going into Sunday singles. As Justin Ray tweeted, the home team has dominated the foursomes aspect of the tournament. It’s the hardest format of the Ryder Cup and having the home course advantage has paid dividends.
If you believe that Team USA will win the Ryder Cup and you do not want to lay the -145 on the Americans, taking USA to win the tournament foursomes at +115 is a great number.
Top USA Wildcard: Ben Griffin +500
He was one of the surprising breakout players on the PGA Tour, winning two times in 2025, one of which came at the Zurich Classic with Andrew Novak (Ryder Cup snub). Ben Griffin just has that “i don’t give a f*ck” demeanor to him and has that attitude of not fearing anyone he plays against. He has been practicing with Bryson DeChambeau, so there’s potential to be paired with one of the stalwarts of the USA roster.
He isn’t one of the biggest names in the field, however he is one of the best players in the field. Ben Griffin is a DAWG.

Tournament Spread: USA -3.5 +180
We haven’t had a close Ryder Cup on paper since 2012, when Europe won 14.5-13.5. The average margin of victory of the last five Ryder Cups has been roughly 6.5 points:
2014: Europe 16.5-11.5
2016: USA 17-11
2018: Europe 17.5-10.5
2021: USA 19-9
2023: Europe 16.5-11.5
If you are looking for a fun prop bet that you can potentially sweat on Sunday, if you think USA is going to win, taking an alternate spread at USA to win by -3.5 points is my choice. I am going with the history/trends that says home field has been a massive advantage since 2014.
